rice fields in Luzon, Philippines

In the Philippines, rice, which is grown in fields like the one pictured above is eaten daily. Filipinos also eat a lot of vegetables. Many different types of fish and some meat is eaten as well. Often meals include several different vegetables with a small amount of meat, served over rice. Patis, a special fish sauce, is used in many dishes. Sometimes on special occasions, a whole pig is roasted (lechon).

Because of the tropical weather, Filipinos are able to grow many different varieties of fruit, for example kiwi, bananas, pineapples, strawberries, cantaloupe, mangos and coconuts.
